Did you know: Minnesotans can now claim the Child Tax Credit, with no limit on the number of children claimed. You must file a 2023 individual income tax return in order to claim the credit. Most taxpayers who are eligible to claim the new Child Tax Credit are also eligible for free tax preparation assistance. Learn more about income requirements and qualifications on the Child Tax Credit webpage: https://www.revenue.state.mn.us/child-tax-credit The tax credit of up to $1750 per child is estimated to cut child poverty by up to one-third in Minnesota. Nearly 300,000 households, including 513,000 children, are estimated to qualify for the credit.

As we conclude National School Counseling Week, we want you to meet Jamie Matson, from Mayo High School. Jamie would tell you that a “typical” day for counselors changes a lot throughout the school year, depending on where we are in the semester or what is happening in the building and community. Some days are filled with one-on-one post-secondary planning meetings with students, and other days are centered around connecting with students, families, and teachers to support students' academic and extracurricular success. Jamie’s favorite part about being a school counselor is helping students gain confidence in their choices and the path they’re taking.

This week is National School Counseling Week. Our counselors work with all students to remove barriers to learning by helping students apply academic achievement strategies, manage emotions, build interpersonal skills, support mental health needs, and plan for post-secondary options. No counselor’s job is the same because they adapt so well to what is needed from our students and schools as a whole. Thank you, counselors, for all you do in Rochester Public Schools!

According to Excelsior University, National Freedom Day is a United States observance on February 1 honoring the signing by President Abraham Lincoln of a joint House and Senate resolution that later was ratified as the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. President Lincoln signed the Amendment abolishing slavery on February 1, 1865, although it was not ratified by the states until later.

Did you know you could work with School Aged Child Care (SACC) in our elementary schools, make $15/hour, and get elective credit toward graduation? A few things to note: Work hours are from 8th hour to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. You can work at an elementary school close to your high school. Applicants must be 16+ and provide their own transportation. Scheduling will depend on your required classes and high school schedule. If your schedule is already full and you still want to work part-time at SACC, contact Nate at naschriever@rochesterschools.org. Summer hours are also available! Summer hiring starts in March/April. Students hired must maintain good work habits to remain in the course. If this interests you, see your counselor for details on credits and to explore your options. Have any questions about the SACC program? Contact Nate at naschriever@rochesterschools.org.
